As a carer, you're the heartbeat of support for someone who depends on you. But here's a critical truth: your health isn't a luxury - it's your most important resource.
The Hidden Cost of Neglect
It is too easy to fall into a dangerous pattern of putting their own medical needs last. Regular check-ups get postponed, symptoms are ignored, and self-care becomes an afterthought. When supporting someone else it can become all to easy to compare your aliments to there's and find reasons why it isn't so bad, or you can be so depleted you just do not have the energy left to push yourself forward in getting to a GP or health provider.
The positives of making the time.
Your nervous system will thank you as it calms knowing you are not neglecting your own needs. It can scream very loud if you try to ignore it.
For some people in need of receiving your support it can sit heavy on them when they see the effects of that role on you. It can be less emotionally upsetting for them if they know you are being taken care of too.
If you can share with your health care team that you are a carer, this can open up other support and assessments to ensure you are being supported.
